Facility Scheduling Information

The Recreation Center's facilities (the Gymnasium building, Disc Golf Course, outdoor playing fields, and tennis courts) are available for reservation by recognized student organizations and university departments and agencies.

NOTE: Administered separately are Rice Athletic facilities, Autry Court, and Fox Gym. For information on these facilities, call the Director of Athletic Facilities at (713) 348-4077.
ALSO: In order to view or search the schedule of events in the Gymnasium, go to the Event Calendar and choose "Recreation Center" in the building pull-down menu.

Requests for facility reservations should be submitted in writing at least two weeks in advance to the Department Coordinator in 203N of the Gymnasium. Submission of a Space Request Form does not confirm a reservation. All reservations are considered on a first-come first-serve basis. A rental fee may be charged for Recreation Center facilities. A schedule of rental rates is available on-line, or you may retrieve specific information from the Department Coordinator at (713) 348-4058.

The Department Coordinator will contact the individual listed on the request from regarding their facility request's status. Please do not advertise your planned event until a written confirmation is received.

  • The Recreation Center's primary goal is to provide leisure recreation within the facility during all hours of operation. We do not accept reservations that would keep us from having at least one gym available for open recreation. However, there will be times when an open gym is not possible due to unforseen circumstances such as mechanical repairs or inclement weather. The exception to this premise would be in the case of an all campus event (i.e. Commencement). Similarly, it would be a rare exception to allow the reservation of all playing fields or tennis courts.
  • Access to recreation space is based on accepted risk management procedures for large public multi-use facilities. The safety of the user is of primary importance.
  • Access to the facility is available only when adequate supervision is in place.
  • Same day gym reservations will not be scheduled during peak times, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
  • Scheduled use of gyms will be capped at 6 hrs/wk for each requesting group. (This does not include competitions.)
  • Scheduled use of the activity room and dance studio will be capped at 4 hrs/wk with up to 8 hrs. available under special circumstances (special events, concerts, etc.).
  • Scheduled use of playing fields will be capped at 9 hrs/wk for each group with up to 12 hrs. available under special circumstances.
  • For all facility requests, game times take precedence over student organization practice times.
  • The weight room may only be reserved for Rec Center Programs.
  • The Rice Athletic department is a partner in the operation of the Gymnasium Building. Their reservation of the Gym and court space will be granted whenever possible - however, all reservations are considered on a first come first serve basis.
  • Scheduling Priority:
    1. Recreation Center Programs
    2. Recognized Student Clubs and Organizations
    3. Athletics
    4. University Departments and Agencies
    5. Community (Special Events)
