How to Become a Lifeguard
Looking for a student job? The Rice Recreation Center Aquatic Program is now looking for lifeguards and swimming instructors. 'New Hire Lifeguarding Skills Checks' are scheduled throughout the semester. If you are interested, please contact harwood@rice.edu.
The Rice Recreation Aquatic Center hires lifeguards year-round. The first step for interested lifeguards is to attend a skills check at the pool. During the skills checks you are asked to practice a few of your basic rescues learned during your Lifeguarding class, such as an active and passive victim rescue, removal from water, and back boarding skills.
Skills checks are held at the beginning of each semester. Additional skills checks may be scheduled when necessary.
The second step is to fill out a Rec Center application, available from the Rec Center Administration Offices, second floor of the gyumnasium building. After applying, someone will contact you for an interview.
The Aquatic Center has a variety of job positions available, beyond lifeguards. Current lifeguards may apply to become supervisors and managers who assist with scheduling, in-services, and timesheets.
Swimming Lessons Instructors are encouraged to apply also. You do not need to be lifeguard certified in order to teach lessons, as we have lifeguards on duty. Instructors interested in applying attend a few trial lessons as instructor aids before being hired. Swim Lessons run year round at the Rice pool.
