How to Become a Writing Consultant
The Writing Consultants who work for the Rice Writing Center
are trained to work with students enrolled in writing-intensive
classes as well as all other students who contact the Writing
Center seeking assistance. Consultants may meet the students
on-line, in their respective colleges, or Herring 238. The writing
consultants' chief goal is to help students prepare papers written
in response to a faculty member's assignment.
Writing Consultants must be nominated by Rice faculty members.
Nominations should be sent to Linda Driskill (driskila@rice.edu;
English Department, MS-30) or Mary Tobin (tobin@rice.edu;
English Department, MS-30). The Writing Center will then request
a sample of the student's writing. If the sample is approved,
the student will be invited to enroll in a one-credit course
(Humanities 318) in the spring semester prior to beginning his
or her paid position in the fall. Humanities 318 instructs potential
consultants on establishing a good working relationship with
their students and developing various strategies to help students
begin, revise, and edit their papers.
