Rice university offers excellent facilities in terms of well-lit, polished, wooden badminton courts. We have three badminton courts which are also shared by people playing basketball and volleyball. Nets are provided upon request and so are racquets and nylon shuttles (from reception desk). However, we expect the more advanced players to bring their own goose-feather shuttles and racquets.

For non-Rice members, there is a nominal $5 fee/visit for using the badminton courts. You will have to fill up a form at the Operations Desk and ask a Rice University member (student, staff, or faculty) to sign you in; only one outsider per Rice member. Washroom facilities are also available. (see below for more details)

There are a couple of other options for non-Rice members who want to become full-time members. You can pay $75 for the whole semester rather than paying $5/visit which might turn out to be more economical in the longer run. This still does not cover the other gym facilities. In order to get full-fledged membership to use all the Rice gym facilities, the fees is $240/semester or $475/year.

Procedure for getting membership for non-Rice members

We have to pay the badminton membership fee every four months. The first
time for the new semester fee is normally August. But you can join the
badminton club anytime if your are a new member.

You normally have to pay a special visit to the second floor of the gym
before 5.00 p.m. during one of the working days, i.e. Monday to Friday. The
office is located toward at the end of the hallway on the second floor of
the gym.

Once You have indicated that you would like to join the badminton club, you
will be given a form
to complete. Most of the items on the form are straight forward. One of the
items that you have to complete is your health insurance. So you have to
bring your insurance card with you in order to complete the form.

To complete the paper work, you will have to attach a check of $75 along
with the completed form.

Once the form is accepted. You will then take a copy of the form and bring
it over to police station
that is located at the entrance of the Rice University complex. You can ask
the students on the first floor to provide the direction.

Once you are in the police station, the police officer will pick up the form
and take a picture of you and provide you a Recreation Center Usage card
right away. Normally the police station closes at 5.30 p.m.
