Summer Tanager
Piranga rubra
"The most widespread and abundant tanager in
Texas ... Sometimes called the 'summer redbird,' the all-red
male might at first glance be taken for a cardinal, but it lacks
the prominent crest and black face of that familiar year-round
resident. The fairly heavy bill is yellowish or horn-colored.
The female remains
a drabber greenish above and mustard yellow or gold below, often
with an orange cast."
The bird above is a Summer Tanager it is full red
plumage. But earlier in the year, it will have a more varied
coloration.
