"Both sexes are brown above and clear gray below, with gray napes and bright chesnut crowns. A thin black line passes through the eye and borders a broad white eyebrow stripe ... Migrants occur commonly throughout Texas and remain through the winter in all but the northern Panhandle."

Alsop (476) adds, "Winter birds have brown-streaked crowns, brown faces, and dark lores."
