Psychology Major Requirements
- Complete 29 hours in psychology
- Complete the core courses
- PSYC 101 - Introductory (AP credit accepted)
- PSYC 202- Social

- PSYC 340- Research Methods
- Complete at least one Block I class
- PSYC 308 Memory
- PSYC 309 Language
- PSYC 350 Learning
- PSYC 351 Perception
- PSYC 360 Thinking
- PSYC 362 Biopsychology
- PSYC 375 Neuropsychology of Language and Memory
- Complete at least one Block II course
- PSYC 321 Developmental
- PSYC 329 Testing
- PSYC 330 Personality
- PSYC 331 Gender

- Complete at least six hours of electives
Students are encouraged to take PSYC 339 and PSYC 340 as soon as possible,
preferably by the end of their sophomore year.
As a rule, students may receive psychology department credit only for classes
taught in a psychology department or by psychologists in another department
who are specifically cross-listed for that purpose. You may petition
the Undergraduate Committee for an exception.
Transfer Credit
- The Psychology Department may (or may not) allow classes to transfer
if they were taken at a junior college or community college before you
enrolled at Rice.
- Once you enroll at Rice, you may not transfer in any
psychology classes taken at a junior college or a community college.
You may not transfer any psychology course taken on a pass/fail basis
or with a grade below C-.
- Before you enroll in a course outside of
Rice, you are strongly encouraged to seek the prior approval of the
advisor in charge of transfer of credit.
- No substitutions or transfer credits
allowed for PSYC 339 or PSYC 340. No substitutions or transfer of credits
allowed to fulfill Block I and II requirements.
- Grades earned for transfer credit are not entered on the Rice transcript.
Transferred courses have no effect on a student's Rice grade point average.
After
matriculation at Rice, students are limited to 14 semester hours of summer
school transfer credit.
To receive Rice equivalent credit, students are required to complete the
appropriate form and secure approval from the advisor
in charge of transfer of credit.
Graduation Requirements
- Be registered at Rice full time for at least 4 full fall and/or spring
semesters
- Complete the requirements of at least the Psychology Department
- Complete
at least 120 semester hours
- Complete at least 60 semester hours at Rice University
- Complete at least 48 hours of all degree work in upper-level courses
(at the 300 level or higher)
- Complete more than half of the upper-level
courses in degree work at Rice
- Complete more than half of the upper-level
courses in Psychology at Rice
- Complete all Rice courses satisfying
degree requirements with a cumulative grade point average of at least
1.67 or higher
- Complete all Rice courses that satisfy the Psychology
major requirements with a cumulative grade point average of at least
2.00 or higher
- Satisfy the English composition requirement
- Satisfy the Lifetime Physical Activity Program (LPAP) requirement
by completing two noncredit courses in LPAP
- Satisfy the distribution
requirement by completing at least 12 semester hours of designated
distribution courses in each of Groups I, II, and III
- Otherwise be
a student in good academic and disciplinary standing and not under
investigation
