Although the program allows considerable flexibility in the planning of courses of study, admission to the program is nonetheless contingent upon at least a rough match between applicant and faculty interests. Prospective applicants should therefore study faculty interests.

Each year many more persons apply to the graduate program than can be admitted, and it is not possible for us to admit everyone who is qualified. In a typical year, for example, we are able to invite only 1 out of every 10 applicants to enroll.

Admissions Criteria

The final selection decision takes into account letters of recommendation, grades, GRE scores, research experience and interests, and the statement of purpose. There is no minimum entrance requirement in terms of either undergraduate GPA or GRE scores. Applicants who were accepted into the program recently had a mean GPA of 3.59, mean Verbal GRE of 590 (range 400-800), and mean Quantitative GRE of 701 (range 540-800). Research experience is an important factor in admissions decisions.

The Psychology Department is interested in recruiting talented Hispanic, African-, Native- and Asian-American students.

Further Information

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test is required for any student whose native language is not English, regardless of whether or not you have attended another U.S. institution. Please see the International Students section for further information.
