We Are Back!

August 21, 2004

After last year’s defeat of the graduate students by the faculty (again), the graduate students decided that their losing streak would not be repeated come August. They bravely battled undergraduates and their fellow graduate students in intramural softball to prepare them for the heavy-hitting faculty team. Once again, the faculty recruited well in the off-season by acquiring Mark Jones.

After playing together in the spring, the graduate students had reason to expect a change in the losing tide. Friday’s practice gave the graduate students even more to cheer about. Could this be the year?

Saturday morning dawned with thunder, lightning, and rain, threatening to destroy the hopes of the graduate students this year, but alas, the rivalry was too great to be placed on hold because of a little mud. The graduate students came with a solid team, a number of excellent alternates, their own scorekeeper, and a bit of organization.

The graduate students gained an early lead (yes, a lead!!) that proved too difficult for the faculty to overcome. Roving in center field, Gavin Dillingham led his fielders in a defensive strategy that was impenetrable. Not only were the defensive skills of the graduate students unmatched by their faculty counterparts, but the graduate students also brought a batting order that would have made Joe Torre proud. Who says Europeans cannot play softball? Someone forgot to tell Michaela, Burcu, Aaron, and Kerim Can.
