Phi Lambda Upsilon ΦΛΥ

Alpha Alpha Chapter, Rice University

 

The aims and purposes of Phi Lambda Upsilon (PLU) are the promotion of high scholarship and original investigation in all branches of pure and applied chemistry.

 

PLU, the first honor society dedicated to a single scientific discipline, was founded as an honorary chemical society in March 1899 at the University of Illinois. Other honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa (humanities), Sigma Xi (scientific research), Tau Beta Pi (engineering)

 

Φ         for Carl Remigius Fresenius, father of analytical chemistry

Λ         for Justus von Liebig, father of organic/agricultural chemistry

Υ          for Jacobus Henricus van’t Hoff, father of theoretical/physical chemistry

 

Rice Chapter:   Founded in 1926 as the 25th chapter

                        Professor Michael Wong [2003-present]

 

Classification of Membership:
