Selection Criteria
&
Process The Beta of Texas chapter may invite
as many as 10% of
Rice seniors for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Candidates
are selected on the basis of the national Phi Beta Kappa
guidelines, as implemented
for the Rice University
campus. Criteria include: 90 hours of liberal course work
(laboratory, performance, and professional courses are
disallowed), 10 courses
outside the division of the declared major (2 beyond the
graduation requirement), grade point average, and good
academic/Honor Council
standing. Selection is made in the early Spring
each year, with
initiation activities
occurring later that same semester. Partial subvention
of membership for initiates is
provided through the Phi Beta Kappa-Beta of Texas
Endowment
and (beginning in 2001) the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni
of Greater Houston. |
