What is NSBE?

------------------------------------------------------------

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), with more than 8500 members, is one of the largest student-run organizations in the country. The Society is dedicated to the realization of a better tomorrow through the development of intensive programs for increasing the recruitment, retention, and successful graduation of minorities in engineering.

NSBE is comprised of over 220 charted chapters located on college and university campuses throughout the United States. These chapters are geographically divided into 6 major regions. NSBE had its genesis at a National Conference planned and hosted by the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University in April of 1975. Black engineering students from the United States and Canada attended the event. From this meeting of concerned students and educators, NSBE was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in the State of Texas.

NSBE Objectives :
- Stimulate and develop student interest in the various engineering disciplines.
- Strive to increase the number of undergraduate and graduate minority students studying engineering.
- Encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering or related fields.
- Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities available to Blacks and other minorities that are associated with engineering.
- Function as a representative body on issues and developments that effect the careers of Black engineers.

New and innovative project ideas are generated and implemented throughout the year on the chapter, regional, and national levels. Some of NSBE's present activities include Tutorial Programs, Group Study Sessions, Junior High School / High School Outreach Programs, Technical Seminars and Workshops, a National Communications Network (NSBENET), a National Magazine (NSBE MAGAZINE), an International Newsletter, Resume Books, Career Fairs, Awards, Banquets, and an Annual National Conference.

The future of the National Society of Black Engineers is unlimited. With the continued dedication of members and supporters, NSBE can and will achieve its full potential. The projects listed above are but a small sample of the infinite possibilities. Perhaps the best description of NSBE's future lies in the definition of its national symbol.

NSBE SYMBOL

The NSBE torch symbolizes our everlasting burning desire to achieve success in this competitive society and to affect a positive change on the quality of life for all people. The lightning bolts represent the striking impact that will be felt by society and industry due to the contributions and accomplishments made by dedicated members of the National Society of Black Engineers.
