I chose the Shepherd school of music because when I first stepped into the music school, I knew it was my home. When I walked I was immediately greeted with friendly smiles and a “welcome to Rice!”- It wasn’t even two minutes before I was encircled by the nicest people, who as soon as they figured out I was a prospective student, wanted to introduce me to all the amazing things that Rice had to offer. They began to tell me how great the teachers were, and how everyone that went to Rice loved the challenge of “competing with themselves” instead of with others. I thought, how could this be true?- but indeed it was. When I sat in on classes, I saw that it was a fun environment with people who shared the same passion as I did: undying love for music. I saw that everyone was wanting to learn about music not only because of the awesome teachers, but because of the students and their positive yet challenging drive that stimulated everyone around them. On top of all this, I came to the Shepherd school because of my current teacher, Stephen King. Because of his vast knowledge of the voice, and his numerous experiences working with many highly respected singers, I knew that his teaching was the right method for me to follow. I have found the teacher who can accomplish the impossible; someone who can train my voice while helping me become a better person in the process.
