PRIVATE LESSONS
Private instruction is available in composition, theory, woodwinds, brass, harp, piano, voice, and strings. Students may study with a graduate student or with a faculty member. Please see our faculty list for a complete list of teachers. All lessons are scheduled by the instructor and usually meet on a weekly basis. Lessons may last from 30 minutes to one hour depending upon the needs of the student and the advice of the instructor. All lessons take place in Alice Pratt Brown Hall, the Shepherd School of Music building on Rice University campus.
CHAMBER MUSIC
Participation is limited to students studying privately in the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program. Students participating in these groups must have attained a certain level of proficiency and participation depends upon the availability of other students of compatible age and ability, as well as proper grouping of instruments. Placement in a chamber music group is done through an audition at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
THEORY CLASSES Virginia Nance, director of the preparatory program, has especially designed the theory curriculum for this program. Students must be studying an instrument but do not necessarily have to be studying through the preparatory program. The classes are grouped by age and extend from age six through high school level. Admission to all levels above primary 2 (second grade in school), is by entrance exam only. Entrance exams are given at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Applicants for music theory should phone the preparatory office to schedule an exam with Mrs. Nance. They may also fill out the waiting list form below. Summer is usually a good time to study theory privately, since theory classes are offered only in the fall and spring.
YOUNG CHILDREN’S CLASSES The Young Children's Division, with a Dalcroze Eurhythmics-based concept, is directed by Rachel Buchman and begins classes for children as early as age two continuing through age eight.
