SHEPHERD SCHOOL SUMMER EVENTS - 2006

Dean Robert Yekovich of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music had a busy summer in 2006 as he toured throughout the US to attend receptions hosted by Shepherd School patrons in Aspen and Santa Fe.  The two locations were selected in large part due to the substantial representation of Shepherd School students, faculty and supporters, who summer in these locations and either participate in or attend the major summer music festivals offered in these destinations.  For many reasons, the Shepherd School had much to be proud of in both Santa Fe and Aspen.

The first event of the summer celebrated the recent appointment of Cho-Liang Lin to the violin faculty at The Shepherd School of Music. Mr. Lin, a world-class violinist and long-time faculty member at The Juilliard School, was a featured performer on a July 20th concert with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Shepherd School guests were treated to a concert of music by Mozart, Neikrug and Shostakovich in St. Francis Auditorium, which was then followed by an elegant dinner under the stars at Santacafé, hosted by Albert and Elizabeth Kidd, Linda Richards and Richard Kendall, and Marcus and Michelle Parker. Among the guests that evening were Nancy and Lucian Morrison, Puddin Clark, Jane Ann and Jasper Welch (Santa Fe Chamber Music Board Member and mother of Bobby Tudor ‘82), Debbie and Cho-Liang Lin, Natalie and Barry Beller (San Antonio and Santa Fe), Mary and Jim Jennings (Houston and Santa Fe), Ava and Cordell Haymon (Baton Rouge and Santa Fe), Judy Sharpe Vergara (Madrid, Spain), Santa Fe artist Forrest Moses (whose exhibit opens in November 2006 at Meredith Long and Company), Sana Morrow (Santa Fe), Susan von Clemm (London and Wellesley, MA), Kathy Matthews, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, and Randall Matthews, and Shepherd School Associate Dean Gary Smith.  Dean Robert Yekovich thanked all of the guests for their support of the Shepherd School and commented on the wonderful relationship that has been developing over the years between the Shepherd School and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival through our talented faculty and students who perform regularly with the Festival in the summertime.  Last year’s Shepherd School event in Santa Fe featured piano faculty member, Jon Kimura Parker, and was hosted by longtime Shepherd School supporters, Dr. and Mrs. H. Irving Schweppe, Jr., who were sadly unable to attend this year’s event due to scheduling conflicts.

The second event of the summer, held in Aspen on July 22nd, and hosted by Rice alumni couple, Nancy and Clint Carlson of Dallas and Aspen, welcomed over 60 guests to an elegant cocktail reception in their brand-new Aspen retreat.  A mini-concert featured two movements from the Ravel String Quartet performed by The Kailas String Quartet, the graduate string quartet-in-residence at The Shepherd School of Music, who were invited to Aspen this summer to participate in the Advanced String Quartet Studies Program at the Aspen Music Festival.  Among attendees were Dean Robert Yekovich, Vicki and Paul West, Dorene and Frank Herzog, Judy Ley Allen, Judy and Rodney Margolis, Kitty and Richard Rabinow, Judy and John Elias, Sis and Hasty Johnson, Mary Ellen and Dick Wilson, Susie and Jack Bace, Rochelle and Sheldon Oster, Jo Ruth Kaplan, Jim Murdaugh, Jenny and Terry Cloudman (Austin and Aspen), Alan Fletcher (CEO and President of Aspen Music Festival and School), Shepherd School Faculty Members Richard Bado, Lynn Harrell, Stephen King, Associate Dean Gary Smith and Professor Emerita Anne Schnobelen.  The Carlsons also graciously invited all of the Shepherd School students who were studying and performing at the Aspen Music Festival and School to attend the event at their home and more than 20 Shepherd School students accepted their kind invitation!
