STUDENTS ACTIVE IN MUSIC ON CAMPUS The Rice Light Opera Society
The Rice Light Opera Society will present Gilbert and Sullivan's comic light opera Patience in six performances March 17-19 and 24-26, 2005 on the Rice University campus at Will Rice College. Rice's population of 4,300 students offers a wide range of campus activities, such as student clubs, intramural sports, volunteering opportunities, and student media.
Altogether, Rice students participate in about 200 clubs and organizations. Wherever a common interest exists, as long as a faculty sponsor is available, a club can be formed.
Shepherd School students participating in the Rice Light Opera Society's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience are cast members Stephan Hammel, Alexandra Boulé-Buckley, Kira Austin-Young, Meghan Tarkington, Nicola Lugosch, and Katina Mitchell. Orchestra and production crew are made up of Shepherd School students Emily Cox, Juliana Tutt, Jacob Barton, Chris Hine, Lauren Holmes (Director), Hsing-Hui Hsu (Music Director) and Yolan Shaw (Rehearsal Pianist).
Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience premiered in 1881 at London's Opera Comique before moving to the new Savoy Theatre. The operetta satirizes the period's "aesthetic" movement and its key figures, such as painter James Whistler and writer Oscar Wilde. This sixth collaboration of Gilbert and Sullivan was immensely popular, and ran for 578 performances.
Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for Rice faculty, staff and students. For directions and ticket reservations call 713-348-PLAY, or visit Rice Light Opera.
