MEDICAL OUTREACH CLUB REACHES OUT TO MEDICAL CENTER

The Shepherd School Medical Outreach Club provides an outlet for Shepherd School students to share their talent and music making with those who don't have regular access to it. The Medical Outreach Club believes that music is a healing force, which is why the program focuses musical performances at places in the Texas Medical Center.

This fall, the outreach program is doing eight events, spread out during the course of the semester. They generally occur on Saturday late mornings, and the programs run about 20-30 minutes.

The Medical Outreach Club is doing events at the Ronald McDonald House, The "Center" (a place for the mentally challenged), the Terrace (a retirement home), and the Houston Hospice. The outreach program encourages students working on solo and chamber music works to perform and gives students the perfect opportunity to read through a piece with a friend(s) that you've wanted to do for fun, but don't have the time at school. The Medical Outreach Club performs a variety of music- classical, jazz, improvisation, and popular songs (like "Twinkle Twinkle" for the Ronald McDonald House).

Sometimes the programs will just be audience choice programs, where we hand out a list of prepared pieces and have the audience choose what they would like to hear.

The student coordinators for the Medical Outreach Club are Joe Cooper (graduate student, trumpet ) and Jennifer Humphreys (graduate student, cello ) and the faculty advisor is Norman Fischer.

Music can soothe and heal, and students at The Shepherd School have the ability to share beautiful music with those in need, and it's a wonderfully gratifying way to come out of the practice room and the concert hall, and interact with the community.
