GRADUATE STUDIES AT THE
SHEPHERD SCHOOL
Welcome to the Rice University Shepherd School of Music. We appreciate your interest in our graduate program and invite you to explore these pages to learn more about the opportunities available here. Although we designed these pages to provide you with all of the details and materials necessary to apply, we know that questions will arise. Do not hesitate to contact our music admissions staff when they do.
Why is the Shepherd School an extraordinary place to study music?
The people. The faculty of the Shepherd School is a distinguished group of artists and scholars that is uncompromising in its effort to provide an outstanding program in teaching, research and performance. Your student colleagues will be among the brightest minds and most talented young musicians in the country.
The facilities. Alice Pratt Brown Hall, the home of the Shepherd School since 1992, features all of our classrooms, rehearsal and performance venues, teaching studios, and practice rooms. Throughout the building, priority was given to the special and finely tuned acoustical environments necessary for studying, rehearsing and performing music.
The performances. The collaboration of our students and faculty results in an exceptionally high musical standard. The level of artistry in the concert and recital halls and on our opera stage rivals many professional organizations and enables the programming of repertoire that challenges and rewards each student.
The city. Really? Houston? Yes, Houston. The nation’s fourth-largest city and home to the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, the Alley Theatre, and major chamber music, contemporary music and jazz series, Houston offers tremendous cultural resources and variety. The cost of living is surprisingly affordable, and you can’t beat the restaurants.
We look forward to working with you throughout the application process.
