GEREON KRAHFORST was born in 1973 in Bonn, Germany. He studied composition, church music, piano, and music theory at the university for music in Cologne, musicology at the University of Cologne and received his diploma and masters degree in organ in Frankfurt. He has studied privately with Markus Karas John Birley, Clemens Ganz, and Daniel Roth.
At the age of 29, he was appointed cathedral organist at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Paderborn and lecturer (Gregorian Chant) at the theological seminary of Paderborn. In 2004 he was appointed lecturer and instructor of organ at the university for music in Hannover, where, since 2006, he has lead the study course in Catholic church music. Mr. Krahforst also serves as representative for this university in the German association of Catholic church music training schools.
During 2004 and 2005, Mr. Krahforst supervised all technical and tonal aspects of the renovation and enlargement of Paderborn´s cathedral organs. He is the artistic director of the International Organ Concert Series of Paderborn cathedral and stays in contact with musicians from five continents. Krahforst is well known for his large repertory (including the complete organ works of Buxtehude and Bach), from ancient to contemporary music. Mr. Krahforst is also a master of organ improvisation in different styles. He has won numerous prizes in prestigious piano, organ, improvisation, and composition competitions.
Making his North American concert debut at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, under the auspices of the Houston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in November, 2007, Mr. Krahforst has performed, lectured, and taught at numerous venues, festivals, and academies in Europe, Latin America, and North Korea.
