THE SHEPHERD SOCIETY

The Shepherd Society marks its 27th anniversary this year, continuing its important mission to support the cause of music at Rice University and in Houston. Founded in 1977 by visionaries Gene Hackerman, Helen Worden and founding dean Samuel Jones, the society helped bring attention to The Shepherd School of Music, which was in its infancy at that time. Mrs. Worden said, "We wanted to form a support group for the school," and that desire became a reality.

The Shepherd School has matured during the past nearly thirty years and is now considered to be in the top echelon of all music schools and conservatories in the world. The Shepherd Society has also grown, and now includes nearly 1,200 members who provide crucial financial support for the school. One of the
Shepherd Society's earliest goals was to help create and build an audience base for the school. Today, more than 300 free Shepherd School events reach an annual audience of more than 70,000, and Shepherd Society members are among the most loyal concertgoers. Financial support from the society has taken many forms. In its early years, contributions from the society enabled the school to purchase much-needed instruments.

Annual membership in the Shepherd Society supports many of these goals. In addition, members receive invitations to faculty and student recitals, the annual madrigal dinner series, a young people's concert and a chamber music concert each spring. We welcome you to join and enjoy the privileges that membership provides.
