Rinaldo

Rinaldo
The first Italian opera to be composed specifically for the English stage, Rinaldo is the fourth of Handel’s surviving operas. Its huge success, which established Handel as the most celebrated composer of the moment, was based largely on the theatricality of the setting, which was designed to utilize spectacular stage effects, and the intense emotional situations of the characters, exploited brilliantly by Handel’s compelling dramatic genius.

Rinaldo contains three of his most beautiful and celebrated arias, including one of his personal favorites,
Cara sposa, as well as the lovely Bel piacere and Lascia ch’io pianga.  The story involves Christian Crusaders battling against Muslims for the city of Jerusalem. The King of Jerusalem enlists the aid of the sorceress Armida, who hopes to defeat the Christian army by using her magic to enchant their general, Rinaldo. Armida abducts Rinaldo’s fiancée, Almirena, and as Rinaldo hurries to rescue his damsel-in-distress, he encounters Furies, Sirens, and the treacherous Armida herself, who proves a passionate and worthy adversary to the Christian hero.
