This is an atomic force microscope false-color image of evaporated gold surface. The surface is pretty granular with grain sizes of a few tens of nanometers. (Click on the images for larger view.)
Jen Steele using our optical microscope took this picture. Supposedly they are a bunch of nano-shells on a surface, but if you look closely around the center of the picture, you can see the head of a man!
This, I just thought, is cute. This is what acetone does to a clear plastic!
