Saving your Word file as webpage

 

·        Create a folder called yourlastname in following folder:

 

                        Tempwrk$ on”fluent” /ling340 /yourlastname/

 

·        Creating a webpage: Open your Word file, type your name and a few other information, “save as webpage”, name it “index.htm”

·        Inserting a picture: Create a new document, Type “Linguistics 340” and some information about your project.  Insert picture saved on  Tempwrk$ on”fluent” /ling340, “save as webpage” and name it “Ling340”.

           

·        Hyperlinks: Highlight the word you want to link, right click on it and select “hyperlink”. Select the page you want to link or type the desired URL.

 

**IMPORTANT: Configure Word to save encoding as Unicode

 

If you are using Microsoft Word to create a webpage, make sure to use the following steps so that you webpage is encoded in Unicode (UTF-8). Go to “Tools” menu. Select “Options”. From Options dialogue box, choose General Tab. Toward the bottom of the dialogue box, you will find “Web Options” button. Click it. In the Web Options dialogue box, choose “Encoding” tab. From “Save the document as” pull down menu, choose Unicode (UTF-8). If you want you can check the “Always save …” box. Follow these steps before you save your document as Web Page.

 

·        “Save as Webpage” with name “index” in following folder:

            Tempwrk$ on”fluent” /ling340/yourlastname/index.htm

 

** If you need to change the name of a file, you will need to open the file and  save as”.  Notice that every time you create a file in Word with a picture, a folder with the same name is created. This folder must have the same name as the file and cannot be renamed manually.

 

You are now ready to FTP your file to the Owlnet server. You can download F-Secure SSH FTP from the Rice IT website.

 

1.      Open F-Secure FTP

2.      Connect: select command/connect
Fill in all appropriate information for your account:
Jungle.owlnet.rice.edu
User name (Rice e-mail)
Password (Rice e-mail)

3.      Create folder called public_html in your Owlnet account

4.      Select file (index.htm) to be sent and folder (public) to receive file

5.      Send “selected” file, click on “file” and select “send file”

6.      Send “selected” file.

7.      To view webpage: http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~your username
