Non-Roman Character Sets
Instructions for Input and Display
Macintosh:
- When dealing with non Roman characters on the Mac’s, you
need to know how to change both the encoding of the page so that
you can view it correctly and how to change the input so that
you can correctly answer exercises. In addition you will need
to know how to change the font.
- First off, Microsoft Explorer and non Roman character sets do
not get along well on the Mac's. Please use Netscape when using
the Mac's. This will aid the staff in assisting you. The exception
to this is Russian. To do anything in Russian please use a PC.
- To change the encoding in Netscape; go to the “View”
menu, at the bottom of that menu you will find “Encoding,”
from there you can choose the proper encoding for the page. You
also have to manually change the display font.
- To change the display font you have to go to the "Edit" menu.
From there you chose "Preferences," and then look for the category
"Appearance" on the left had side of the window that pops up.
You will then choose (click) "Font" under that category. Then,
on the right hand side of the window you should be able to specify
the font that you want things displayed in. Each Mac is set to
display only certain fonts, and the others are not loaded, so
make sure that you are using a Mac that supports the language
you wish to use.
- To change the input font, click on the blue diamond in the top
right hand corner of the screen. You can then select the input
language you would like to use.
- Using the PC’s is very similar to the Mac's, but much
easier because of the method of input.
- If you want to use Netscape you will still have to go through
the steps above to change the encoding of non Roman pages, but
you should be able to use NJStar Communicator for the input of
either Chinese or Japanese, although we are still having some
problems with Japanese input. Hopefully they will be resolved
soon. For Arabic or Korean please use a Mac. Again, the staff
will be able to better assist you if you are using the correct
system.
- To input in Russian go to the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen,
find the blue box in the "System Tray" with an "EN" in it and
click on it. You should then be able to select the Russian Keyboard
and you can get a keyboard map from the staff.
- Hopefully you will not have to change the fonts manually when
using the PC's, but if you have to the instructions are the same
as they are for the Mac's.
