Using Microsoft's
Pinyin IME to type
Simplified and
Traditional Characters for Office XP
back
Follow these directions in order to get Microsoft Global IME set up on
your computer to type in Chinese. These instructions are for computers running
Windows 2000 and using Office XP.
- A new
feature of Office XP is the language toolbar.
It should appear in the upper right corner of your screen.


If you don’t see the language bar, it might be minimized as a blue box in your
taskbar.
Click the blue icon and select Show the Language bar.

- To type in
your selected language, click on the current language.
Choose the language you would like to input in.
For Simplified characters, select PRC.
For Traditional characters, select Taiwan.

- The default
input method should be Hanyu Pinyin. To check, click on "tools" and select "properties." Then select the tab "keyboard mapping"

If you find that this is not the case, check for the correct IME settings.
- To use Bopomofo
go to correct IME settings
In STEP 2 (keyboard mapping), instead of Hanyu
Pinyin, select the sixth option “secondary bopomofo”
- As you type,
the text will automatically convert into characters within the
context.
If needed, while the text is still underlined or highlighted,
press the right or down arrow to select from homophones.

- Once the dotted line is gone, that
means the character is set. To go back
and change the characters highlight the characters and right click on the
mouse. Then select “reconvert.” This should give you a list as shown in
step 5. Otherwise proceed to the
next step.
- To go back and
correct characters, use the Correction feature in the Language bar.
Place the cursor in front of the character and click the Correction button
for a list of homophones as shown above in #5.
