About the LRC

The Language Resource Center (LRC)
Our Mission
Our Mission at the Language Resource Center is to provide a wide
range of technological and traditional resources to enhance and
promote the study of foreign language, literature, and culture at
Rice University. We provide technological resources, support, training,
and development for the Center
for the Study of Languages.
The Language Resource Center is a state of the art facility created
to support the needs of foreign language study.
We provide
- Resources for classroom instruction and independent study.
- Information and training for use of equipment and software.
- Support for technology-enhanced curriculum development.
- Professional and knowledgeable staff to assist you.
Services Provided for Language Faculty
- Space reservations for orientations to teach students how to
use software programs required for their courses.
- The LRC's own Learning Management System, ExTemplate, which
enables faculty to develop web based multimedia exercises with
complete record keeping in all languages offered at Rice.
- Workshops in integrating technology into the foreign language
curriculum.
- Digitizing and streaming of frequently used videotapes and audio
recordings for more widespread use.
- Videotaping of classes and instructors.
- Server space for faculty
web pages, audio and video files.
Services Provided for Language Students
- Internet access to all digital audio and video material required
for foreign language classes.
- Forty computers for the use of foreign language software programs
only available in the LRC.
- Technical support for input and browsing of non-Western languages
and all the software programs required for language courses.
Faculty Development Lab
The Development Lab is equipped with three Windows computer stations
and two Macintosh stations to assist faculty with webpage design,
audio recordings, digital video edits, and web-based exercises.
Two Computer Classrooms
Forty Windows computer stations installed with software programs
to supplement the study of thirteen languages, including Arabic,
Chinese, English (ESL), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili; a teacher station
at the front of each classroom is equipped for on-wall projection.
Both classrooms are available for class use or library mode for
students.

and DVDs).
- Over 170 CD-ROMS and DVDs with a variety of foreign language
software to support language learning.
- 6 Portable CD/audiocassette/AM/FM boom boxes.
- 20 High-quality
Marantz audio recorders.
- 1 Analog video camera and 3 digital video cameras.
- 1 Digital photo camera

it is located between the Fondren Library and the statue of William
Marsh Rice, facing the Academic Quad.
