Cells with excitatory connections to other neurons

  • Pyramidal cells (by far the most numerous type)
  • Spiny stellate cells
  • Cells with inhibitory connections to other neurons

  • Large basket cells (two subtypes)
  • Columnar basket cells
  • Double-bouquet cells
  • Chandelier cells
  • Smooth stellate cells without distinctive axonal pattern
