Mentoring partners consist of a full range of diverse organizations including non-profits, large corporations, government agencies, and start-up companies. A number of organizations that have participated in the SME program in previous years are listed below. ABC 20/20: This placement with the John Stossel unit at 20/20 is an excellent gateway into the media world. Excellent communication skills, familiarity with current events, a high level of professionalism, and an additional interview with ABC staff are required.

Amigos de las Americas: Amigos facilitates service trips to Latin America for high school students. Responsibilities in the Houston office include project coordination and staff training. Working knowledge of Spanish is required.

Ashoka: Innovators for the Public: This organization in the Washington, D.C. area promotes social entrepreneurship nationally and internationally by funding and developing individuals who run successful entrepreneurial social ventures.

Capital One Bank: A diversified financial services provider, this Fortune 500 company is a good placement for students interest in finance and economics.

Center for American Progress: Progressive Washington, D.C. think tank dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action.

Center for the Study of the Presidency: This Washington, D.C. research and policy institute examines past successes and failures of the Presidency and relates its findings to present challenges and opportunities. Strong writing and editing skills are preferred.

Cameron International: Growing engineering corporation specializes in products and services for the oil and gas industry with potential opportunities in the marketing, finance, operations or engineering departments.

EEOC - Equal Employment Opportunity Commission: Great opportunity for future lawyers! The EEOC enforces laws prohibiting job discrimination.

Fox News: This New York City placement is one of the country's largest 24-hour news networks. The work environment is energetic and challenging. Knowledge of current domestic and foreign affairs and an ability to write well are critical. An additional interview with Fox News may be required.

Harry Abrams Publishing: This NYC publisher is internationally recognized for their art books. This is an excellent opportunity to get an inside look at the world of publishing. Students will be working on the sales and marketing side of the business, with possible exposure to the editing side as well. Working knowledge of French is a plus.

Houston Downtown Alliance: This merger between the Downtown Houston Association and the Theater District Association aims to serve and promote the business and residential communities in downtown. DHA organizes "The Main Event" activities, as well as other committees, social activities, and volunteer opportunities for its members.

Houston Endowment: The Endowment is the philanthropic institution in Houston, and you will assist in gifting millions of dollars to community organizations. The person in this position must have good writing skills and an interest in not-for-profit management.

National Science Foundation: NSF is one of the largest grant-funding organizations for the sciences.

R7 Solutions: This IT start-up, founded by seven Rice graduates, has opportunities for students with technical experience. R7 provides technology solutions to Houston-area businesses in the energy, transportation, government, financial, homebuilding, and healthcare industries.

St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities: St. Luke's is a grant-making, non-profit public charity that aims to increase opportunities for health enhancement and disease prevention.

United Nations World Food Program: This Washington D.C. placement supports emergency needs and economic and social development around the world through rescue, rehabilitaton, and hunger deterrence programs. Stong writing skills are a must.

Univision: This Washington, D.C. news bureau provides the Spanish-language network with current national politics material. The small office assures that the student participates in all aspects of TV news production. Fluency in Spanish and strong communication skills are required.

U.S. Department of Education: This Washington D.C. placement is a good opportunity for students interested in education policy or looking towards careers in education.
