2009 LACUS Conference

The 2009 annual meeting of LACUS will be held August 4-8 at Pitzer College (one of the Claremont Colleges), located 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in Claremont, California .

Conference theme: Mechanisms of Linguistic Behavior

The program includes papers on a broad range of approaches to language, including interdisciplinary topics and innovative ideas. In addition, since LACUS XXXVI (2009) coincides with the 80th birthday of Sydney Lamb — who attended the first LACUS meeting in 1974, was President of LACUS in 1984, and has served as Chair of LACUS since 1995 — several of the papers presented will relate to his work and contributions.

Venue

Pitzer College, one of the Clarement Colleges, is known for its academic excellence. Claremont is a very attractive college town with several excellent restaurants.

Atherton Hall, a recently built residence hall, will be available exclusively for LACUS attendees. It is constructed on "green" principles. Each room has an outside entrance and extends from front to back of the building, with transoms on the doors for flow-through ventilation. It also have air-conditioning (which turns off automatically when a windown is opened. The rooms come in pairs with a bathroom in between. Atherton Hall has 24 double rooms and 8 singles, for a total capacity of 56 people. The building also has a nice room for informal gatherings, with a piano. There is a swimming pool close by.

Parking is free on the Pitzer Campus during the conference. Participants can park anywhere on the Pitzer Campus, but the college recommends the East Mesa Parking (#15 on the Pitzer College Map), south of Atherton Hall and Gold Student Center.

The cafeteria, in McConnell Hall, has a good variety of high-quality food, with produce obtained, as much as possible, from local farmers.

Meetings will be in Broad Center (rhymes with road, load). It is within easy walking distance from Atherton Hall and the cafeteria.

Travel

The Ontario International Airport is close to Claremont. Attendees should definitely arrange to fly to Ontario, NOT TO Los Angeles International Airport. It is possible to get to Claremont from LAX but is much harder than from Ontario. Taxi fare from the Ontario Airport is about $33.00. Lodging

Atherton Hall, on the Pitzer College campus has attractive modern accommodations. Room rates, single or double, are $60 per night. Double rooms are the same price whether occupied by one or two persons, so the cost is $30 for each person occupying a double room. Breakfast in the nearby McConnell Center will be provided for those staying in Atherton Hall at a cost of $8 per day (total $38 per day for double occupancy or $68 per day for single). Lunch (@ $8) is also provided each day except Thursday (August 6th) and Sunday (August 9th), as well as dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, August 4th and 5th, before the evening lectures. at a cost of $14. (No lunch on Thursday because there is an excursion, which will include lunch.)

To reserve a room in Atherton Hall, send an email to kiriko.komura@cgu.edu of Claremont Graduate University, giving the following information: Name(s), Male or Female (if not obvious from name), date of arrival, date of departure, type of accommodation desired (single or double), identification of roommate desired (or, you can ask for a double room with no designated roommate and take your chances). Reservations must be made by July 1st. Payment for rooms in Atherton will be made at the LACUS registration desk upon arrival.

The Doubletree Claremont Hotel (formerly Claremont Inn) is at 555 West Foothill Blvd., about a mile from Pitzer College. It has attractive eating facilities along with other amenities. Special rates for LACUS members (mention LACUS when calling for a reservation) are $109 per night. This rate is available from August 1st through the 10th for those who would like to arrive early or stay after the meeting for sightseeing. For reservations, call 1-909-626-2411 or 1-800-222-8733, and be sure to mention LACUS to get the special rate. To obtain the special rate, reservations must be made by July 1st.

The Hotel Casa 425 is a very attractive new boutique hotel in the Claremont village at 425 West First St., about 1.5 miles from Pitzer College. Mention Pitzer College to receive a special rate from $145. For reservatios call 1-909-624-2272
