Despite the name, Rice Karate Club practices Chayon-Ryu, a system of martial arts founded in 1968 by Grandmaster Kim Soo, a tenth-degree black belt. Chayon-Ryu, Korean for "The Natural Way," is based on the idea that self-defense should utilize only natural movements, instead of contrived, awkward movements. The system draws on the best of the following styles:
