Application Information

  • Stipend
Each participant will receive a stipend of $1500, housing on campus, meals, and assistance with travel costs. Help will be provided for those with special needs.

  • Eligibility
Any full-time faculty member of any rank who teaches at an American college or university or any foreign citizen who has taught full time in the United States for a minimum of three years is welcome to apply to the Institute. The Institute is especially designed for two and four-year college faculty who teach in the humanities, in particular in English literature, classics (Latin and medieval Latin), foreign languages, comparative literature, medieval studies, music, religious studies, philosophy, history, and the study of women and gender. Preference will be given to those with a Ph.D. and several years of teaching for whom the Institute might make the most significant difference in their teaching and research and who have not attended an NEH Institute or Seminar in recent years.

  • Application
You may request a brochure to be mailed to you via regular post by filling out this online form (the brochure contains the same information as this website). A complete application should include the official NEH application form (download by clicking and printing out) and these materials (note: there IS no other application form):

    1. A curriculum vitae that lists professional accomplishments, including education, professional experience, previous NEH Institutes and Seminars attended (please describe), publications, courses taught, languages read and spoken, and a statement of eligibility.

    2. A letter of application that describes the significance of the subject of the institute for the applicant's teaching and professional interests, specifically in relation to a course or courses (actual and/or projected). If it is an established course, a syllabus and hand-outs, assignments, examinations, or other teaching materials would be helpful.

    3. A letter from the applicant's dean or department chair that describes the significance to the institution of the applicant's participation in the Institute, to be mailed directly to the Institute director.
