Tuition, Fees, Room and Board for Entering Freshmen 1998-99

Undergraduate Tuition: The tuition rate for the entering first year and transfer students enrolling in 1998 was $14,675. By
Board policy, tuition increases for continuing students each year are tied to the Consumer Price index and, thus, do not
exceed inflation. The following table shows the annual tuition as applied in this manner for the academic year 1998-99:

Students matriculating in 1997-98
Students matriculating in 1996-97
Students matriculating in 1995-96
Other continuing full-time students
$14,150
  13,450
  12,550
  11,500

Any undergraduate who withdraws or takes an approved leave of absence and then gains readmission to the university pays the tuition applicable at their matriculation, plus annual Consumer Price Index increases for a period not to exceed six years. After six years, students pay the tuition applicable to the entering freshman class.

Fees: Mandatory fees, as set by the Board, for students for the 1998-99 school year included the following:

$  75.85
    75.00
    50.00

Information regarding refunds can be found in the Rice University General Announcements 1998-1999 catalog, which is available from the Office of Admission, and can be found on-line at http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~catalog/.

Room and Board: This fee of $6,400, set by the Board for academic year 1998-99, covered dining hall costs and residence maintenance. They are established each year, as needs dictate. This charge provided room and all the meals eaten during the year.

Admission and Records. Further information regarding the costs, refunds, and payment schedules was found in

Estimated Other Expenses

Other estimated expenses of $2,280 included books, transportation, and personal expenses that ordinarily occur during
an academic year.

Financial Assistance

As policy, Rice meets 100% of a student’s financial need as determined by financial aid eligibility, although a student does
not necessarily have to accept an award. During the school year 1997-98, 86% of undergraduate students received
some form of financial aid and were eligible to receive financial aid for 10 semesters. All semesters for which students have an active transcript in the Registrar’s Office count in the 10-semester limitation whether they have received financial aid or not.

brochure, also available from the Office of Admission; and the Rice University 1998-1999 publication,
