Enrollment and Class Sizes
(as of September, 2004)

Enrollment

Enrollment numbers included both full-time and part-time students enrolled in Rice’s academic programs who had registered and paid their fees as of the official deadline, approximately four weeks after the beginning of the fall semester. Enrollment numbers exclude students studying abroad during the fall semester.

Professional students were fifth-year students who had already attained a baccalaureate degree and were pursuing either a Bachelor of Architecture or a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Students in programs culminating with degrees such as M.Acco. or non-thesis masters fell under the "Graduate" student and "Graduate" degree classifications.

Median Class Sizes

The median was the point that divided the distribution in half. In other words, there were as many undergraduate classes with fewer than 14 students as there were with more than 14 students. These numbers were calculated for undergraduate courses offered for Fall 2004. This calculation excludes independent study, internship, and one-to-one reading courses.

Undergraduate Class Sizes

Undergraduate class sizes were reported for the 1,032 classes for which undergraduate students were enrolled in Fall
2004. This calculation excludes independent study, internship, and one-to-one reading courses.

Student-to-Faculty Ratio

Student-to-faculty ratio was based upon the number of full time faculty equivalents (618) for Fall 2004. The undergraduate student number was 2,886; the "all students" number was 4,973 and included undergraduate (2,886), graduate (1,922), and professional (47) students.

Sources: Faculty data are maintained in two databases: (1) the Banner Financial and Human Resources
Systems database (an Oracle-based system for managing financial and human resource activities of Rice),
operated by Administrative Services; and (2) the Provost’s faculty database, administered by and in the office
of the Manager of Faculty Affairs. Data became static as of October 1. Reconciliations are conducted by the
Office of Institutional Research (OIR) and Manager of Faculty Affairs.

The student data were derived from Banner.
