Enrollment and Class Sizes
(as of October 1, 1998)

Enrollment

Enrollment numbers included both full-time and part-time students enrolled in Rice’s academic programs who had registered and paid their fees as of the official deadline, approximately four weeks after the beginning of the fall semester. Enrollment numbers exclude students studying abroad during the fall semester.

Professional students were fifth-year students who had already attained a baccalaureate degree and were pursuing either
a Bachelor of Architecture or a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Students in programs culminating with degrees such as
M.Acco. or non-thesis masters fell under the "Graduate" student and "Graduate" degree classifications.

Median Class Sizes

The median was the point that divided the distribution in half. In other words, there were as many undergraduate classes
with fewer than 13 students as there were with more than 13 students. Likewise, there were as many graduate classes with fewer than 7 students as there were classes with more than 7 students. These numbers were calculated for all
undergraduate and graduate courses offered for Fall 1998.

Sources: Enrollment numbers are provided from AIMS (see footnote). The median class sizes were
calculated by the Office of Institutional Research from data submitted by the Office of the Registrar containing
a list of all enrolled graduate and undergraduate courses.

Undergraduate Class Sizes

Undergraduate class sizes were reported for the 745 classes for which undergraduate students were enrolled in Fall
1998. Generally, undergraduates enrolled in undergraduate courses, although some undergraduates enrolled in graduate courses, with appropriate advising.

Sources: Enrollment numbers are provided from AIMS (see footnote). The number of classes by enrollment
range was calculated by the Office of Institutional Research based upon data provided by the Office of the
Registrar containing a list of all enrolled graduate and undergraduate courses.

Graduate Class Sizes

Graduate class sizes were reported for the 455 classes for which graduate students enrolled for Fall 1998. Although most
graduate classes enrolled graduate students, some undergraduate students enrolled in graduate classes, with appropriate
advising.

Sources: Enrollment numbers are provided from AIMS (see footnote). The number of classes by enrollment
range was calculated by the Office of Institutional Research based upon a data file provided by the Office of
the Registrar containing a list of all enrolled graduate and undergraduate courses.

Student-to-Faculty Ratio

Student-to-faculty ratio was based upon the number of full time faculty equivalents (548) for Fall 1998. The undergraduate student number was 2,743; the "all students" number was 4,268 and included undergraduate (2,743), graduate (1,486), and professional (39) students.

Sources: Faculty data are maintained in two databases: (1) the Banner Financial and Human Resources
Systems database (an Oracle-based system for managing financial and human resource activities of Rice),
operated by Administrative Services; and (2) the Provost’s faculty database, administered by and in the office
of the Assistant Provost for Faculty Administration in a Macintosh Filemaker Pro spreadsheet. Data became
static as of October 1, after which two reconciliations occurred. The first reconciliation was conducted by the
Systems Analyst in Administrative Systems between the Banner faculty database and a copy of the Provost’s
faculty database, where the two files were merged to create one comprehensive database. Once this occurred
and major problem areas were identified and resolved, the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) received a
copy of the comprehensive database, at which time the second reconciliation began. OIR sorted and reconciled
each category with the Systems Analyst, Human Resources, or Assistant Provost for Faculty Administration.
The student data were derived from AIMS (see footnote); other data were derived from the Office of the
Registrar’s Report to the President Fall 1998.

Footnote: The Administrative Information Management System (AIMS) is the student information system that runs on a Prime 5320 computer and is maintained by several enrollment services offices including the Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar, and the Financial Aid Office.
