Tuition, Fees, Room and Board for Entering Freshmen 2005-2006
Undergraduate Tuition: The tuition rate for the entering first year
and transfer students enrolling in 2005-2006 was $23,310. By Board policy since
the fall of 1994, tuition increases for continuing students each year have been
tied to the Consumer Price index and, thus, do not exceed inflation. However,
the Board of Trustees recently approved a plan to phase out the undergraduate
tuition indexing program beginning with the class entering in the fall of 2004.
The following table shows the annual tuition as applied for the academic year
2005-2006:
| Students matriculating in 2004-05 Students matriculating in 2003-04 Students matriculating in 2002-03 Students matriculating in 2001-02 Students matriculating in 2000-01 |
$21,830* 20,310* 19,360* 18,610* 18,510** |
*Tuition indexed for five years from year of entry
**Tuition indexed for six years from year of entry
Any undergraduate who withdraws or takes an approved leave of absence and then
gains readmission to the university pays the tuition applicable at their matriculation,
plus annual Consumer Price Index increases for a period not to exceed six years.
Starting with fall 2001 matriculants, the index period is not to exceed five
years. After five/six years, students pay the tuition applicable to the entering
class. Indexing does not apply to classes entering after spring 2003.
Fees: Mandatory fees, as set by the Board, for students for the 2005-2006
school year included the following:
| Student activities Health service Total |

Room and Board: This fee of $8,980, set by the Board for academic year 2005-2006, covered dining hall costs and residence maintenance. They are established each year, as needs dictate. This charge provided room and all the meals eaten during the year.
Other estimated expenses of approximately $2,350 included books, and personal expenses that ordinarily occur during an academic year. Transportation expenses vary.

Financial Assistance
As policy, Rice meets 100% of a student’s financial need as determined by financial aid eligibility, although a student does not necessarily have to accept an award. During the school year 2004-2005, 82% of undergraduate students received some form of financial aid and were eligible to receive financial aid for 10 semesters. All semesters for which students have an active transcript in the Registrar’s Office count in the 10-semester limitation whether they have received financial aid or not.
