HOUSTON

With a population of 1.9 million, Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the nation. The greater Houston area has a population of 4.8 million and covers 8,778 square miles. Houston's economics span the energy, healthcare, space, high-tech, and chemical industries. Houstonians support more than 500 cultural, visual, and performing arts organizations; 75 art galleries; five major museums; resident companies in opera, theater, symphony, and ballet; and four major league sports franchises. THE TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER

Across Main Street from campus is the Texas Medical Center, the largest concentration of healthcare facilities in the world. Texas Medical Center has over 40 member institutions, including two medical schools, four schools of nursing, 13 hospitals, and other non-profit medical facilities. There are more than 16,000 students enrolled and more than 60,000 employees on the 700-acre center. More than 5 million patients visit the medical center annually.

HERMANN PARK

On the eastern side of the Rice campus is Hermann Park, Houston's first public park. In addition to picnic areas, a reflecting pool, a miniature train, and a golf course, the park includes the Houston Zoo, Japanese Garden, Miller Outdoor Theater, Buddy Carruth Playground for All Children, and Houston Garden Center.


THE MUSEUM DISTRICT

Immediately northeast of the Rice campus is Houston's Museum District, which includes the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the Contemporary Arts Museum; the Children's Museum; the Houston Museum of Natural Science; the Jung Educational Center; the Holocaust Museum Houston; the Lawndale Art Center; the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum; the Museum of Health & Medical Science; the Menil Collection; Houston Photography Center; the Rothko Chapel; and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS AND THE VILLAGE

Rice University lies in the center of University Place, a collection of established civic clubs that forms one large neighborhood. Rice and University Place are flanked by the city of West University Place, which acts as an individual entity within the city of Houston. The Rice Village, just west of the campus, is an eclectic mix of more than 450 stores and restaurants within easy walking distance of campus.
