OVERVIEW

Rice University is an
independent, coeducational, nonsectarian, private, research university
dedicated to undergraduate teaching and to graduate studies, research,
and professional education in selected disciplines. The defining
characteristics of Rice are its small size, exceptionally gifted
students, low tuition, distinguished faculty, acclaimed research
and scholarship, financial stability, and is campus of uncommon
beauty.

FACULTY

| Rice has 476 full-time,
140 part-time, and 167 adjunct faculty as of fall 1998. They teach
and conduct research in 8 academic schools: Architecture, Continuing
Studies, George R. Brown School of Engineering, Humanities, Jesse
H. Jones Graduate School of Management, Shepherd School of Music,
Wiess School of Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. 98% of the
faculty hold Ph.D.'s or equivalent terminal degrees in their fields. |

STUDENTS

The fall 1998 student
body consisted of 2,748 undergraduates and 1,526 graduate and professional1 students. Undergraduates are 56%
male and 44% female, with a student-to-faculty ratio is
5 to 1. Of the undergraduates entering in 1999, 75% were in the
top 5% of their high school class and 25% are National Merit Finalists.
The middle 50% of the entering class had composite SAT I scores
between 1,330 and 1,500. 54% of Rice students hail from Texas; 34%
come from elsewhere in the U.S.; and 12% are from outside the U.S.
Undergraduate tuition
for 1999-2000 was $15,350 for entering freshmen, $14,900 for 1998-99
matriculants, $14,350 for 1997-98 matriculants, $13,650 for 1996-97
matriculants, and $12,750 for 1995-96 full-time students; graduate
tuition was $16,100 ($17,100 for those in the Jones School). Students
are admitted without consideration of financial circumstances; 80%
of undergraduates received some form of financial aid in 1999-2000.

ALUMNI

| Rice currently has 40,256
living alumni. Of the 36,054 alumni whose locations are known, 32.8%
reside in Houston, 18.9% live elsewhere in Texas, 45.0% live elsewhere
in the U.S., and 3.2% live outside the U.S. |

ENDOWMENT
|
|
| |
| Rice ranked fourth for
private, research universities after Princeton, Harvard, and Cal Tech
in amount of endowment assets (approximately $697,000) per full-time
equivalent (FTE) student (according to National Association of College
and University Business Officers (NACUBO)FY99 FTE numbers). The FY99
market value for Rice's endowment was $2.94 billion. |
