SUMMARY


OVERVIEW

Rice University is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian, private, research university dedicated to undergraduate teaching and to graduate studies, research, and professional education in selected disciplines. The defining characteristics of Rice are its small size, exceptionally gifted students, low tuition, distinguished faculty, acclaimed research and scholarship, financial stability, and its campus of uncommon beauty.


FACULTY

Rice has 460 full-time, 147 part-time, and 170 adjunct faculty as of fall 1998. They teach and conduct research in 8 academic schools: Architecture, Continuing Studies, George R. Brown School of Engineering, Humanities, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Administration, Shepherd School of Music, Wiess School of Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. 98% of the faculty hold Ph.D.'s or equivalent terminal degrees in their fields.


STUDENTS

The fall 1998 student body consisted of 2,743 undergraduates and 1,525 graduate and professional1 students. Undergraduates are 52% male and 48% female, with a student-to-faculty ratio is 5 to 1. Of the undergraduates entering in 1998, 81% were in the top 5% of their high school class and 26% are National Merit Scholars. The middle 50% of the entering class had composite SAT I scores between 1,340 and 1,510. 53% of Rice students hail from Texas; 35% come from elsewhere in the U.S.; and 12% are from outside the U.S.

Undergraduate tuition for 1998-99 was $14,675 for entering freshmen, $14,150 for 1997-98 matriculants, $13,450 for 1996-97 matriculants, $12,550 for 1995-96 matriculants, and $11,500 for other continuing full-time students; graduate tuition was $15,300 ($15,750 for those in the Jones School). Students are admitted without consideration of financial circumstances; 85% of undergraduates received financial aid in 1997-98.


ALUMNI

Rice currently has 39,423 living alumni. Of the 35,372 alumni whose locations are known, 33.4% reside in Houston, 19.0% live elsewhere in Texas, 44.4% live elsewhere in the U.S., and 3.2% live outside the U.S.


ENDOWMENT

Rice ranked second for private, research universities after Princeton in amount of endowment assets ($507,352) per full-time equivalent (FTE) student (according to FY95 FTE numbers) in 19962. The FY98 market value for Rice's endowment was $2.7 billion.
