| Q:
What is the IAESTE National Conference?
A: Two days of fun workshops and socializing in Baltimore! This year, the conference will be held between 3-6 February, so you will definitely get to see enough snow to make up for the coming winter in Houston. Also, if you register before 1 December, the registration fee is lower, and trip will be mostly subsidized by IAESTE Rice. Email Tiffany Truss for more information or to reserve your place! Also check out the conference website: http://www.aipt.org/iaeste/natlconf/intro.html
Q: I missed the Application Workshop. What did I miss? A: The requirements for applying for an IAESTE internship are majoring in a science or technical field, being 19 years old, and having junior standing for archies or sophomore standing for all other fields. If you are a member, apply by 1 December! The application fee is only $35 for members and $50 for non-members.
Q: I missed the Employer Workshop. What did I miss? A: The Job Raising Committee has already secured three jobs, providing three opportunities for Rice students to work abroad! We are looking for 3-6 more jobs for international students, so send your favorite professor a quick email to see if they might be interested! If you would like to get involved with the job raising committee to increase your chances of getting an IAESTE internship, email Zo Fuentes.
Q: My Friday nights looking lonely. Can IAESTE help? A: Definitely! Email Zo Fuentes. I think he's a Libra. Actually, he can give you the time and location of a cultural dinner that IAESTE at University of Houston is sponsoring!
Q: Whens the next meeting? A: Next week, Thursday, at 9pm. It will be a joint meeting and Redemption Party! That means you can trade in your hard earned IAESTE points for cool IAESTE stuff (makes a great Christmas present). |

Q: When is IAESTEs next event? A: This Monday, 25 October, we are having a social lunch with our club sponsor, Cheryl Matherly from Rice Career Services. Come to Sammys at noon, and leave whenever!
Q: How can I get some quick IAESTE points? A: Join the national chapter of IAESTE by 1 November! Simply contact sbailey@rice.edu or wnolte@rice.edu and let them take care of the paperwork for you. It only costs $15, and you save at least $75 on your application process. Also, the Rice chapter of IAESTE needs 15 nationally registered members to raise jobs and have guaranteed internships for Rice students.
Q: How do I start the application process for my IAESTE internship? A: Come to the Application Workshop on 3 November from 6:30 to 7:30 in Miner Lounge. The topics covered will be how to apply, what to expect when you apply, and what it really means to get a job offer. Also, earn 10 IAESTE points for posting flyers about the event (flyers will be sent via listserv), and 15 points for helping set up or clean up fifteen minutes before or after the event. Spring Retreat: We sent two people to the Regional Spring Retreat this weekend (April 2-4) in Lake Tahoe. Fundraising: The President's Programming Fund gave us $500 dollars for the reception of the interns this summer. We have other funding from the Student Activity's Fund and from National IAESTE. Reception: If anyone is going to be in Houston this summer, they could help us spend all the money we raised for reception. We have over a thousand dollars to spend entertaining the five interns. Contact Meredith (mergray@rice.edu) if you are interested. We discussed issues of temporary housing for some of the interns who are staying into the school year. Cheryl Matherly, our faculty advisor, plans on having a BBQ at her house in June. Meeting with Cheryl: Some of the officers will meet with Cheryl for a lunch meeting April 5 in Sammy's.

Zo acted as president in the absence of Meredith. The next meeting will be on April 1. I Engineers Without Borders: We had a guest speaker from Engineers Without Borders, Mike Higuera. It is an organiation of students that works with communities to design and implement projects to meet basic needs such as water sanitation. Current communities are in Mexico, Mali, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. This is an excellent opportunity to combine travel abroad and community service. The Rice chapter's website is www.rice.edu/ewb. To learn more about Engineers Without Borders email ewb@rice.edu or our speaker at higuera@rice.edu. II. Fundraising: We received $600 from the Student Activities Fund. Some IAESTE members worked security during Beer Bike and earned $100. III. Spring Regional Retreat: It will be April 2-4 in Lake Tahoe California. There will be a lot of fun and a little business. The
next meeting is 2/19. It is very important that people attend. We are holding
OFFICER ELECTIONS at the next meeting. If you are interested in running,
email Meredith (mergray@rice.edu). If you don't email her in advance, you
may not be able to run. Positions include:
President Reception: Are you going to be in Houston for the summer and need something to do. Would you like for IAESTE to pick up the check? If so, join the reception committee and entertain interns. A car would also be helpful. To join the reception committee, email Jean Daley (jcdaley@rice.edu). Membership: We need ideas. In previous years, we have had dinner at an interesting cultural restaurant (usually Thai Spice) and had it subsidized by IAESTE. If anyone has any suggestions for a restaurant or possible other activities feel free to suggest them; we'll have fun using IAESTE funds. Email Aylin (atansel@rice.edu) if you have ideas or want to join the reception committee. Jobraising: We raised three jobs last semester. Fundraising: We have the baseball cleanups coming up again this semester. There will be one or two a month. It's a really easy and quick way to raise money for IAESTE especially if a lot of people help. We don't have any dates yet, but we'll keep you posted. The money we raise allows us to send people to conferences, entertain foreign interns over the summer, and have fun IAESTE acitivities. Please help!! IAESTE National Conference: It will be February 5-8 in Baltimore. The deadline to register for the conference was last week. It's a fun weekend away from Houston. The national conference is a good way to get tips on how to raise jobs and money for IAESTE. There are also informational sessions on IAESTE and ways to market your IAESTE experience. Future meetings are 2/19, 3/18, and 4/15. |
