Plumbing is a very important part of the clinic project, as it is something of a “clean water project” unto itself. This is an area with a very poor water supply, and the population is regularly exposed to serious water-borne diseases like typhoid. At the clinic, gutters on the roof will collect clean rainwater and channel it into an underground reservoir. Water will be pumped as needed from the reservoir into an elevated tank, and then the pull of gravity will supply the pressure necessary for the water to travel from that tank to faucets inside the building. If nothing else, a child with diarrhea will be able to come to the clinic for a clean glass of water. In the future, maybe even this summer, we will probably work to bring this type of water system to more places in the area.
