2005 MORENO/RANGEL LEGISLATIVE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The Mexican American Legislative Leadership Foundation is pleased to announce that Applications are being accepted for the 2005 MORENO/RANGEL LEGISLATIVE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. The Foundation, established by the Mexican American Legislative Caucus is a non-profit, non-partisan 501(c) (3) corporation committed to fostering the development of leadership skills among Latino youth.

The program is named after the longest serving Hispanic member of the Texas House of Representatives, Paul C. Moreno, and the first Mexican-American woman to serve in the Texas Legislature, the late Irma Rangel. It provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students from across the state of Texas to gain first-hand experience working in the Texas House of Representatives during the 79th Legislative Session.

Selected students will be placed with one of the 40 Mexican American Legislative Caucus members and serve as full-time policy interns undergraduate students) or fellows (graduate students). These students will work alongside experienced legislative staff and participate in seminars designed to enhance their understanding of the legislative process through interaction with various other interns and fellows, elected officials and state agency representatives.

Each participant will receive a $2,000 monthly stipend to assist with living expenses. The program begins the first day of the session, January 11, 2005, and ends the last day of the session on May 30, 2005. Interns and fellows will be required to work full time in Austin, Texas, for the entire duration of the Legislative Session.

Attached with this e-mail you will find a notice and application for the program. We would greatly appreciate your help in posting the notice in a highly visible place for students and distributing this information among faculty, staff and student organizations.

You can also visit http://www.mallfoundation.org to download applications. The deadline for submitting completed applications is October 15, 2004.

The more students we can get to apply the better. We look forward to receiving applications from some of the students you work with and providing this great opportunity to a new generation of Latino leaders.

Sincerely, Ben Gallego Program Coordinator
