This course is the follow up course of HIND 201 Intermediate Hindi, and is open only to students who have taken HIND 201 or have the instructor's permission to take the course. Through extensive use of cultural documents includings feature films, radio broadcasts, and newpaper articles, this course continues to build students' proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing Hindi. The introduction of various Hindi Literary traditions, provides a space for meaningful interaction with authentic materials and furthers the student's appreciation of cultural nuances. This course will prepare the student for further academic and nonacademic use of Hindi. Emphasis will be placed on spontaneous self expression in the language. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the hindi samaroh which typically takes place on the weekend before the last day of classes.

Class organization: In addition to the regular Tuesday and Thursday class meetings, small groups of 4-5 students each will meet for one hour of directed conversation with a proficiency assistant. Students will be assigned to conversation groups after the second or third week of the semester. The meeting time for each conversation group shall be determined by the group itself. Topics and guidelines will be provided for the conversation sessions. Participation in these conversation sessions is a required component of the course.

Reading and other materials: Course materials and foci of the course vary each year depending on both, the needs and interests of the students in the class, as well as contemporary issues. These will include graded texts ranging from authentic newspaper/magazine articles to literature by Premchand, Manto, Chugtai, Shivani, Bhandari, Rakesh and others; feature films which are related in contents to the textual materials being read; and supplementary material reinforcing grammatical structure and vocabulary will be assigned weekly. Some of these materials will also be posted on the class homepage. When posted on the homepage you will be able to access it through the assignments link.

Grading: Course grades will be based on class participation including participation in the conversation sessions, obligatory Homework including but not limited to weekly writings and blogs, quizzes, skits, projects and 2 midterms.
