Hindi 201 consolidates and builds on the elementary-intermediate level foundation laid in Hindi 101/102. There is a steady progression in the student's ability to communicate in and understand Hindi. Instruction with authentic materials including, but not limited to, feature films, radio broadcasts and graded literary and non-literary texts helps the student appreciate cultural nuances. Emphasis is placed on spontaneous self-expression in the language.

Class organization: In addition to the regular Tuesday and Thursday class meetings, small groups of 4-5 students each will meet for one hour of directed conversation with a Proficiency Assistant. Students will be assigned to conversation groups during the second or third week of the semester. The meeting time for each conversation group shall be determined by the group itself. Topics and guidelines will be provided for the conversation sessions.

Reading and other materials:
Course materials and foci of the course vary each year depending on both, the needs and interests of the students in the class, as well as contemporary issues.
Graded texts ranging from authentic advertisements and newspaper/magazine articles, to children stories and higher level literature; feature films which are related in contents to the textual materials being read; and supplementary material reinforcing grammatical structure and vocabulary, will be assigned weekly. Some of these materials shall also be posted on the class homepage. When posted on the homepage you will be able to access it through the assignments link.

Grading:
Course grades will be based on class participation, obligatory homework, quizzes, skits, 2 midterms and an on-line individual project (which shall be presented in class during the last week of classes). On the last Tuesday of classes, students are required to submit a file including all graded homeworks, essays, quizes, exams and projects that they have completed over the course of the semester. Failure to submit such a file will affect the final grade as the file is used to assess the student's progress.
