Assignments

An essay on any topic of your choice, unless otherwise specified, is due every Tuesday.
Most weeks you will find additional assignments to be covered
over the entire week posted on this page. "#" refers to the section in
the grammar reference book.
week 5: Sept 25-27.
- Familiarize yourself with the entire vocabulary of Text 1.
- Read, understand and learn personal pronouns and simple present
and simple past tense of the verb honaa [You may
also refer to Snell #1.1 pg
21 and #4.1 pg. 51. (Ignore the sentences given as examples in this
section.)]
- For Tuesday, Sep 25:
- Tuesday writing ("lekh"): use simple
present and past tense of verb honaa.
- Complete the worksheet handed out in class.
- learn Cardinal numbers 0-13, Snell Apendix 1 pg 251.
- Go over the song
meraa jootaa hai jaapaanii. Go over the lyrics,
vocabulary, unscrambled lyrics and sing along sections on the site.
- For Wednesday Sep. 26: do the exercises listed in the
song meraa
jootaa hai jaapaanii.
- For Thursday Sep. 27::
- Interrogatives continued, Snell #1.2 pg 22 and #2.1 pg 30.
- Text 2: Read Text 2 from the file text four to five times with minimal
reference to the transliteration in the text.
- Familiarize yourself with the vocabulary in Text 2.
- Terms of relationships, Snell Appendix 4, pg. 255
- Nouns, Snell #1.3, pg 23-24
- Adjectives, Snell #1.4, pg 24-25; #2.2 pg 31; #2.4 pg 34
- Aggregatives (eg. dono~), Snell #7.5, pg 93.
- Review class notes on yahaa!, vahaa~, kahaa!, jahaa.
- Word parings, echo words and repitition of words.
- Tuesday writing due Oct 2: Write a lekh using as many
professions and nationalities as possible.
week 4: sep 18-20.
- For Tuesday, Sep 18:
- Read, understand and learn personal pronouns and simple present
and simple past tense of the verb honaa [ You may
also refer to Snell #1.1 pg
21 and #4.1 pg. 51. (Ignore the sentences given as examples in this
section.)]
- Go over entire Text 1 from the file text , including the vocabulary
and grammar four to five times. Read the text with minimal reference to
the transliteration.

Tuesday writing ("lekh"): Write a simple conversation between two
or more people. Use a variety of greeting forms and ways to address
eachother. Play with the vocabulary and phrase structures from
"Introductory phrases 1 & 2" and from "Simple conversation". Make it
interesting.
- For Thursday Sept. 20: do the ExTemplate exercise: "Parichay 1" by 2pm
- Cardinal numbers 0-15, Snell Apendix 1 pg. 251.
- Nouns, Snell #1.3, pg 23-24.

- Text 2: Read Text 2 from the file text four to five times with minimal

week 3: sep 11-13.
- For Tuesday Sept. 11:
- Do the following ExTemplate exercise: "Hindi Script Recognition".
- Write your name in Hindi
- Do the conjunct character exercise from Hindi Varnmala.
- Learn to recognize all Vowels and Consonants.
- For Wednesday Sept. 12:
- Read Snell pages 1-18 and learn to recognize all Vowels
and Consonants.
- Quiz 1: We Sep 12
- Read Text 1 from the file text four to five times with minimal reference to the
transliteration in the text.
- Familiarize yourself with the vocabulary lists of text 1.
- Read, understand and learn personal pronouns and simple present
and simple past tense of the verb honaa, Snell #1.1 pg
21 and #4.1 pg. 51. (Ignore the sentences given as examples in this
section.)

- Review consonant-vowel conjunction done in class and do any homework given in class.
- Read the Hindi Sound system and the Devanagari script, Snell
pg. 5-11.
- Do the following ExTemplate exercises:
- "Consonant Recognition 1" (this includes the consonants from "ka-~na", i.e. the first two consonant lines).
- For Thursday Sep 06:
- Go over
"simple conversation" covered in class.
- Do the following ExTemplate exercises:
- "Consonant Recognition 2" (this includes the consonants ".ta-na", i.e. the 3rd and 4th lines of the consonants).
- "Consonant Recognition 3". (this includes the consonants "pa-ha", i.e. the 5th, 6th and 7th lines of the consonants).
week 1: aug 28-30.
- For Wednesday, Aug 29:
- Go over
"introduction 1" covered in class.
- Read and familiarize yourself with the Hindi Sound system and the Devanagari script, Snell
pg. 5-11 (till section "Visarga"). You may find the following link useful:
- Practice writing the vowels from Hindi Varnmala
- Complete any other assignment given in class.
