Last semester the GSA put together a task force to look at the issue of health insurance for graduate students. The report of the GSA Health Insurance Task Force is publicly available at the following link:

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~marcosh/GSA_Health_Insurance_Final_Report.pdf

The report makes several recommendations, including a higher subisy for the health insurance premium.

If you have any questions or comments about the report, please contact Marcos Huerta (marcosh@rice.edu) or Angela Hvitved (hvitved@rice.edu).

3. Beer Bike

Fellow Grad Students!

Who are the Beer Bike Champions??? WE ARE!!! The GSA Team whooped all the undergrad teams into oblivion in 2004 and 2005 will be no different.

Get into winning shape:

Todd Jaszewski will lead a series of training sessions to bring you into shape to ensure that those undergrads swallow their pride again. Email me or the bike captains if you want to be on the team. If you already emailed me, you're already on the mailing list. The first official tryouts will be held late February, usually on Sunday afternoons. Specific dates for practice tryouts are forthcoming.

Women's Captain: Jenny Greeson ( jgreeson@rice.edu )

Men's Captain: Todd Jaszewski ( jaszewsk@bioc.rice.edu )

Still Need Pit Crew Members:

We still new valiant pit crew members!!! You'll have to practice at least once catching each racer before Beer Bike.

Submit your T-Shirt Design:

I am taking T-Shirt design submissions for the GSA Beer Bike T-Shirt. Email me your design as JPEG files or powerpoint files. Please use your name in the file name (example: xxx_JohnSmith.jpg)

A word from Todd:

So, it's almost that time of the year. I'm not planning on starting actual tryouts until the end of February, but in the meantime I figured we could get in some training. Apparently the undergrads have been doing this since November, but they don't really have lives or papers or things like that, I figure. And if I'm wrong, well, then maybe I just missed out on something in my undergrad career.

Training sessions might be a good place to start, though, and I'm willing to lead some of them, this year. It turns out we had a great team last year, but I think we could be faster and secure another victory if we get in a bit of conditioning beforehand. To that end, I'm thinking many of us might benefit from running some stairs in the stadium or doing some jogging around the Rice campus. The stairs would involve about twenty minutes to a half hour of constant stair running (and jogging) in the stadium, and possibly some sprinting, as well, down on the field. I have to check hours, but I think it's open at all realistic times (save weekends). The running on the track would be no more than one lap (possibly less, if we do the inner loop), and we'd all try to go the same pace - thus, if you haven't done much running in the past, don't be intimidated. This is purely for the sake of endurance, not speed, which we can build later. At the business end of a whip, if need be.

So, I don't know what times are good for all of you or how many times per week you'd want to do this. I was considering around 3:00 or 4:00 on Mondays and Fridays (or Mondays and Thursdays). After which we can retire to Valhalla or something. I'm not really sure. If this infringes on a department's ability to participate (I know you business school people have some weird-ass class hours) then let me know what I need to schedule around, and I'll do it to the best of my ability. If I can't include some people for whatever reason but you still want to train, I can do another one at some different time and try to steer it in the direction I think is best (though it may not actually be). Whatever works.

Email me if you're definitely interested in participating, and what times would be best (or worst) for you.

5. Free Rent

I was recently on campus advertising some units that we have available for Rice students very close to campus. Our property is located at 7901 Cambridge, off Old Spanish Trail near Fannin. We are currently seeking an on-site manager to assist us with the leasing, marketing and day-to-day operations. We thought that you being President of Student Affairs may have an advantage in spreading the word to current students.

We are offering the student Free Rent as compensation for living on site and working with us while they study. This could be good experience for anyone thinking about entering the real estate or marketing field. Or any student for that matter that could use Free Rent and study while they work.

Duties:

Live on site, help with collection of rent, posting of late notices, relaying maintenance calls to management, posting flyers along bus routes and think creatively about other marketing ideas.

Description:

The on-site manager would need to be on the property for a few hours a day during the week and pick one day each weekend to be available for showing vacant units to current prospects.

We are looking for someone that is trustworthy, honest and reliable. Please forward this on to any students you feel may be a good fit for this opportunity. Thank you for your time and if you have any questions, please feel free to email or call.

Sincerely,

Travis Smith

Because this is a brand new class, it is FREE for the entire month of February. So, if you are still at work at 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays (and if you are a "good" grad student, as defined by your advisor, you are!), why don't you take a break and check out this FREE class!

7. Little Woodrow's In the Village Special!
