Resources for Ear Training on the Web

The following sites are highly recommended for interactive aural skills development using the World Wide Web. Most, if not all, require a Java-compatible browser and Quicktime.

Ear Training for Improvisation
by M. Hopkins of the University of Michigan. Hints, helps, and suggestions for aural skills development and pedagogy. Pages include numerous Etudes in the form of MIDI files, consisting primarily of rhythmic and harmonic accompaniments suitable to use with improvisation studies.

Ear Training Software
by David Bradfield. David Bradfield works at CSUDH, and has a number exercises for both Mac and PC platforms at his site. Note that his software is in the alpha-testing stage.

Ear Training Course, from
J. Kavol. This site, although not as yet complete, promises to be the equivalent of two years of typical college ear-training. Numerous practical exercises and tests on the various pages.


Aural Comprehension Guide. Written by David Loberg Code, of Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo, these pages are a fairly comprehensive collection of ear-training activities, including shape-note singing (!). Recommended.
