Neither Whores Nor Submissives
(Ni Putes Ni Soumises)

Sihem Habchi, President of NPNS

4pm, Monday April 14, 2008
117 Humanities Hall, Rice University

Ni Putes Ni Soumises is an association for women living in underprivileged neighborhoods in France. It aims to create and sustain a large space for women to live free from both male violence and fundamentalist sexism. Sihem Habchi, President of the association, has actively engaged in the causes of equality, secularism, and mixité (gender diversity and togetherness). Her conference will focus on the association's successes and challenges in contemporary French society. Ni Putes Ni Soumises (NPNS) can provide a fruitful example for those asking questions about feminism, racism and religious intolerance throughout Europe and in the U.S.

We invite activists and scholars of French studies, women's studies, religious studies, immigration and multiculturalism in Houston to participate in this lecture and discussion.

Sponsored by the Tenneco Lecture Series of the University of Houston and Rice University's French Studies Department and Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.
