NIPTOC

2000-2001 Tournament at the University of Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma hosted the first ever NIPTOC (February 22-23, 2001).

Results

After an eight-round round-robin in prelims, NIPTOC broke to semi-finals with the following teams advancing:  Claremont EP, Oklahoma SS, Rice MW, and Rice NS.  The resolution for semi-finals was:  This House should bite the hand that feeds it.

In the first semi-final, Rice MW was on the government against Claremont EP.  Rice MW proposed that NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) should ban the use of depleted uranium in its member states' armies over the objections of the hand that feeds it, the United States.  Rice MW won the round on a 3-0 decision.

In the second semi-final, Rice NS was on the government against Oklahoma SS.  Rice NS proposed that the IMF (International Monetary Fund) internally restructure itself in a manner not agreeable to its main contributor, the United States.  Oklahoma SS won the round on a 2-1 decision.

In finals, Rice MW won the flip and elected to oppose.  This gave Oklahoma SS its choice of two resolutions; Oklahoma SS opted for The United States federal government should intervene in Africa.  Oklahoma SS proposed that the US should intervene militarily to end the diamond wars in Central Africa to prevent further violence, particularly involving the children of the region.  Rice MW won the round on a 2-1 decision and thus captured the first NIPTOC title.
