How to get a job
- The Department sends a job description
to Student Financial Services (SFS) either on paper or electronically
at fina@rice.edu. The
job description should include the Department Name, Job
Title, Job Description, Working Hours, any special considerations
or restrictions, Pay Rate, Job Location, Contact Person
and Contact Phone Number. SFS will post to Job Listings.
Please note that it may take a few days for the position
to be posted.
- Students check the job website; if they find a position that interests them they may
log onto ESTHER and print out a Student Personnel Action form (PA).
The student then contacts the department to set up an interview.
- If a department wishes to hire a student, the department completes the student PA form
and sends it to SFS for processing. DEPARTMENTS SHOULD FULLY COMPLETE THE FORM AND KEEP A COPY FOR
THEIR RECORDS.
- SFS Staff confirms that the student is enrolled. If a department desires to pay a student
using work study funds, SFS confirms the student has work study funds that the award is valid-students may
not use work study funds for more than one position at a time. Identifier information is entered into the
Banner system; the PA form is sent to payroll for processing. For questions related to payroll and
completing additional payroll items (such as I-9 and W-4 forms) please contact the payroll office.
Please note that it may take several days for the PA form to be processed by SFS and then processed by payroll.
Depending on when in the payroll cycle they begin employment, the first paycheck may be delayed.
- November 1 work study award offers are cancelled for students who are not employed
using work study funds. If a student wishes to seek employment after November 1, and a department desires
to pay the student using work study funds, the student should contact SFS to discuss whether work-study
funds may be available.
