South Africa does not produce any rice domestically. Therefore, all of the
nation’s consumption needs are met through imports. In 2002, South African
rice imports are estimated at 540,000 tons, up slightly from the estimated
532,000 tons imported in 2001.
In 2001, South Africa imported most of its rice from Thailand, with smaller
amounts coming from the U.S., India, Uruguay, the UK, Vietnam and
Australia. South Africa re-exports small amounts of its imported rice to
other African nations such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Congo and Mozambique.
